Ann had many disabilities: she found lots words unpronounceable, though communicating with others was her greatest pleasure; her love of pork chops was at war with her total lack of teeth; and her delight in buying neat little things like a tiny bottle of Texas Pete was hampered by her inability to count and handle money. Despite all of them, she soldiered on, forever in love with dogs and the errant human race. Each time I took her out for lunch, she’d cut off a generous piece of her hamburger steak and send it home, wrapped in a tattered napkin and love for Zac, needing a full report on how he liked it as soon as I got home to deliver her treat. He always loved it, and I loved her.
