Thomas Edison Timmons, devoted husband of 70 years, adored father, beloved grandfather, WSFC school principal & WWII Navy Veteran went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 25th. He was 97. For all who knew him, "Tommy" was a thoughtful, generous, smart & humble man. He was an avid yardman, a collector of many things, a furniture lover & had a servant's heart. He was born January 20, 1926 in Surry County to Mitchell & Essie (Deatherage) Timmons.
As a boy, Tommy was nurturing to his siblings, always putting others first. After joining the Navy at 17, he served as a Hospital Corpsman until his honorable discharge in 1946. He went on to attend Appalachian State Teachers College where he earned a Bachelor's of Science in 1949 & a Masters of Art in 1954. Tommy met his wife "Shiney" while teaching at Flat Rock High School & they continued in education, moving to Winston-Salem to pursue their careers. Tommy has always been fiercely loyal to his family & friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth “Shiney” Timmons; three daughters, Debbie Christensen (Clyde) of Winston-Salem, Kitty Hunt (Cliff) of Winston-Salem, & Julie Mayberry (David) of Charlotte. He is also survived by his brother, Robert "Bobby" Timmons (Doris) of Mount Airy; & two sisters, Myrtle Davis of Fairfax, VA & Peggy Inman (Clifford) of Mount Airy; six grandchildren, Rachel Breslin (Chris) of Durham; Becca Biggs (Blake) of Tampa, FL, Ruthie Taylor (Luke) of Winston-Salem, Katherine Hunt of Charlotte, Wesley Mayberry of Charlotte & Whitley Mayberry (Molly) of Charlotte. He is also survived by his five great-grandchildren, Noa June Breslin, Titus Breslin, Emett Breslin, Simeon Breslin & Josiah Taylor.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 11:00am at Pfafftown Christian Church. The family will receive visitors from 10-11:00am at the church prior to the service. Memorials or flowers will be accepted at Pfafftown Christian Church, 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.
The family would like to thank their special caregivers from Piedmont Homecare - Theodora, Victoria & Daisy for their exceptional care. They would also like to thank the doctors & nurses on the 6th floor of The Cancer Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist & Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House for their many kindnesses throughout this process.
