Miriam Todd Obituary

Our beloved Miriam Maner Allred Canipe Todd is now resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus. After taking her last breath on August 10, 2022, she was reunited in spirit with her parents Cliff and Viola Allred, brother William Allred, husband Laurence Todd, brother-in-law Fred Garvey, sister-in law Linda Allred, nephew Tom Garvey, and several dear friends. Miriam’s family rejoices in her homecoming and celebrates the many blessings she bestowed on others during her time on earth.
Miriam was born in Charlotte, NC on May 2, 1935 and spent her childhood and youth in Winston-Salem, NC pursuing friendships, reading, sports, and music while being raised in a traditional family complete with southern cooking, gardening, tennis, neighborhood socials, and church-going with her siblings Frances Garvey Wilson (Bill Hazzard), William Allred (Jerry Ann), and John Allred (Linda). Miriam was a member of the Student Council, the National Honor Society, and the concert and marching bands of RJ Reynolds High School. She maintained meaningful connection with her high school classmates by organizing and attending 60 years of class reunions.
Miriam was in the first graduating class of the new Winston-Salem campus of Wake Forest University. After her husband, Tommie Canipe, completed medical school, Miriam and her family were deployed to Tokyo, Japan for several years of military service. Upon returning to the US, the family settled in High Point, NC where Miriam raised her three children, Beth Wilborne, Lee Canipe (Tammy), and Cliff Canipe (Stephanie).

Miriam received a Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and education was at the core of Miriam’s career pursuits while teaching English and serving as a school counselor in North Carolina and South Carolina. She had a passion for troubled youth and worked with at-risk children in alternative schools and even visited her students while they were imprisoned to encourage and support them. Miriam embraced the inner beauty of all those she met and had a way of imparting hope, even when the circumstances seemed hopeless.
Miriam was active in Christian ministry in her church and community, teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir, leading women’s Bible studies, ministering in Africa, and serving as a volunteer counselor in women’s shelters. Miriam’s prayer life was the cornerstone of her faith, and she spent several hours per day seeking God’s face in meditation and Bible study. She led many individuals, including her children, to the saving grace of Jesus through her unwavering trust in God.
Miriam adored visiting her adult children through the years as their families relocated throughout the US and Africa. Her children cherish the memories of these visits and carry on her legacy of nurturing family bonds.
Miriam’s wisdom, generosity, kindness, and strong faith will be carried into future generations through the precious lives of her friends and extended family, including her seven grandchildren Scotti Lechuga (Ernie), Carly Canipe (Gary), Chase Canipe (Chelsea), Brad Wilborne (Kelli), Camille Canipe, Natalie Canipe, and Wesley Canipe, and twelve great-grandchildren who affectionately call her Mimi.
“Well done, Miriam, my good and faithful servant,” so says the Lord.
