McRay Greene Obituary

McRay Greene, age 90, of Walnut Cove passed away on October 28, 2021 at Oak Forest Health and Rehab in Winston Salem.

Mr. Greene was born on December 13, 1930 in Stokes County to Dewey McKinley Greene and Effie Rae Rutledge Greene. He was a US Army Veteran having served his country during the Korean Conflict.  After returning home, he worked with his father and brother at King Lumber Yard Company and on the family farm. He retired from Hanes/Sara Lee Hosiery with more than 40 years of service. Mr. Greene was one of the first DOI certified Fire Service Training Instructors to teach thru Forsyth Technical Community College providing training to fire departments throughout Forsyth and Stokes Counties. He was a past member of Forest Hill VFD and Sauratown VFD, and was instrumental in the formation of South Stokes VFD of which he was a charter member.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Bobbie Ruth Sizemore; sister Virginia Lee Greene; brother and sister-in-law Devere "Bill" (Clara) Greene; nephew Frankie Greene; and step great-grandson Finn Booker Doss.

Mr. Greene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who instilled in his family a strong work ethic and the importance of helping others. Left to cherish those memories are his son McRay "Nubbin" (Gail) Greene Jr.; daughter Karen (Benny) Hill; grandsons Christopher Hill and Benjamin "Benji" (Heather) Hill and their daughters Ella Kate and Olive Grace Hill; step grandson Kevin (Lisa) Doss and their daughter Sayre Kellan Doss;  nephew Wesley (Angela) Greene and family; along with extended family and friends.

A graveside service with full military rites will be held at Quaker Gap Baptist Church on Monday November 1, 2021 at 1pm with Danny Spainhour officiating. There will be no formal visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Quaker Gap Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2265 Flat Shoal Rd, King, NC 27021 or to Trellis Supportive Care at 101 Hospice Lane Winston Salem, NC.
