David Phillips Obituary

PHILLIPS

“My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness,….all other ground is sinking sand.” Edward Mote, William B. Bradbury

David Ray Phillips, born on May 30th, 1939 to Alonzo Lee and Lettie V. Phillips died on March 10, 2025.  He was blessed of the Lord to live on this earth for 85 years and he gave thanks to God for every day, knowing that God was ever so merciful to him and so forgiving despite all his failures to serve Him as he should.  He was a Christian and he enjoyed reading and studying the Bible and he continually sought for the truth of God’s word and steadfastly held to SOLA SCRIPTURA (Only the Scriptures). He gives thanks to God for all his brothers and sisters in the Lord, and for all their spiritual guidance, help and prayers during his pilgrim journey on earth.

He was married to a most wonderful woman, Frances Reaves Phillips for 66 years having married her on January 5th, 1959 and he believed that she was his gift from the Lord and often quoted to her Proverbs 18:22 “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.”  He called her his Proverbs 31: woman.

He was preceded in death by his father Alonzo Lee Phillips in 1993; his oldest brother Edford Dallas Phillips in 1979; his stepfather Charlie Jacob Tise Sr. in 1979; his mother Lettie V. Tise in 1996; and his brothers Charles Jacob Tise Jr. in 2019, Thurmond Lee Phillips, and Billy Gray Phillips,; his sister Peggy Beckerdite.

He is survived by his wife Frances of the home; oldest son David Ray Phillips Jr. (Jennifer) of East Bend; a son Ricky Allen Phillips (Susie) of East Bend; and a daughter Kim Renee Reid (Mike) of Salisbury.  He is also survived by a brother Roger Dale Phillips of Westfield; a sister Linda Tice (Roger) of Virginia; five wonderful grandchildren Jill Renee Phillips, Courtney Carol Phillips, Austin Ray Phillips, all of East Bend and Andrew Christian Purcell and Graham Jacob Purcell of Salisbury; three great-grandchildren Raylee Page, Noah Preslar, and Mary Frances; and many nephews and nieces. David gives to God all the glory and praise for any earthly accomplishments and finds nothing of himself to glory in. “That according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”  (1st Cor 1:31)

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday March 13, 2025 at 1pm at Shallowford Baptist Church with Pastor Terry Lane officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Gardens in Clemmons.  The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12pm-1pm at the church prior to the service.
