Gerdie S Davis

March 8, 1922 ~ January 17, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old

Gerdie Samuel Davis, 93, of East Bend, entered heaven to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 17, 2016. Gerdie was born on March 8, 1922 to James Mahlon and Isabell Saunders Davis. He was the youngest of 16 children. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Alva and T. Carl Davis, two sisters, Mabel Norman and Edna Matthews, and 11 other siblings.

Gerdie grew up in Smithtown before moving to High Point, where he lived with John and Crawley Mickey for several years. He served in the 928th Aviation Engineer, US Army, Heavy Equipment Section. After serving in World War II in the Azore Islands and Guam, he returned to North Carolina where he married his wife of 69 years, Katie Lee Matthews Davis. They had two daughters, Deborah Dawn Gough (husband Grady) and Tanya Kaye Hamm (husband Mike). Gerdie is also survived by two granddaughters, Melissa Hamm Swaim (husband Kevin) of Lewisville and Misty Leigh Hamm of Winston-Salem, and four great-grandchildren, Michael, Jacob, and Katherine Swaim and Brooklyn Heyman. He is also survived by two very special friends, Clifford Powell and Gene Davis.

Gerdie was known throughout the community for his gardening, corny jokes, storytelling, picking out water wells, and his ability to fix tractors. He owned G. S. Davis Garage for many years and retired from National Linen in Winston-Salem. After his retirement, he transported cars for his son-in-law at PAV, Inc. He was the oldest member of Prospect United Methodist Church and also the oldest member to read the entire Bible in one year. He was a member of the American Legion Post 336 in East Bend, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be at 3 pm, Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Prospect United Methodist Church, 3541 Smithtown Rd, East Bend. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial with full military honors by VFW Post 10346 will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center after the burial.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Yadkin Nursing Care Center for the wonderful care given to Gerdie during the last 14 months. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church, in care of David Williams, 4008 Prides Road, East Bend, NC 27018
