Edna Myers

Edna Isabel Teague Myers, 99, passed away May 1, 2013, at Imperial Crest Health Care in Hawthorne, Calif.

Edna was born July 2, 1913, in Siler City, N.C., the daughter of William Claudius Teague and Mary Jane Teague, both teachers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Rev. Donald G. Myers, and six siblings: Rev. Coy Teague, Marvin Teague, Bryce Teague, Mary Teague, Frank Teague and Joseph Teague. Another sibling, Sheldon, died in infancy.

Edna graduated from Siler City High School in 1930 and worked at Efird’s Department Store in Winston-Salem. She later attended Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, N.C., graduating in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in music. She taught piano and directed the Glee Club at Whiteville High School.

In 1940 Edna married Rev. Donald G. Myers, a Baptist minister in Chadbourn, N.C. The couple later resided at Mount Olive and Wadesboro, before moving to Reidsville, N.C., where Rev. Myers served as pastor of First Baptist Church for 29 years. Edna taught private piano lessons and was active in the church, teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School classes and serving in the Women’s Missionary Union and other church organizations. She was a member of the Morning Glory Home Demonstration Club and various other civic groups.

After retirement in 1976, the couple moved to Wake Forest, N.C., where Rev. Myers worked at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and served as interim pastor at several churches in the area. Edna served as a deacon at Wake Forest Baptist Church. In 1989 Edna moved to Brookridge Baptist Retirement Home in Winston-Salem, N.C. She relocated to California in 2005.

            Edna is survived by three children: Rev. Charles Myers and wife Joyce of Hendersonville, N.C., Joseph Myers and wife Angel of Kernersville, N.C., and Elizabeth Myers-Trivers and husband John of Manhattan Beach, Calif. Grandchildren are Graham Myers, Kathryn Myers, Connie Calvert and Julian Trivers. There are numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

            The funeral service will be held Thursday,  May 9, at Huff Funeral Home, 212 E. Main St., East Bend, N.C. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. with visitation at 12 noon. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. followed by burial at the East Bend Baptist Church cemetery. Rev. David Huggins will officiate.
