Welcome to the memorial page for

Charles P. Smith

December 31, 1940 ~ July 17, 2017 (age 76) 76 Years Old

My Daddy was born on 12/31/1940 to Benbow Preston and Verna Petree Smith. Truth be know, he was probalby born on 1/1/1941. But Grandma didn't want a New Year's Baby, and his Daddy could claim him for a whole year on his taxes if it was 1940. So, 12/31/1940 it was.

He leaves behind to cheris his memories me and my husband Coleman and our two boys Johathan and Daniel, his brother Edward and wife Carol, two sisters Vivian (Jimmy) Reid and Susanne Smith, his special adopted sister, Sharon Abercrombie, his nephews James (Monica) Smith and Keith (Connie) Smith and their families, and his nieces Tammy (Lorene) Temple, Sandra Reid, Robin Reid, and Vickie (Darrell) Wooten and their families.

Daddy had a lifetime love of racing and was a member of the East Bend Drag Strip and raced go-carts, too.

Me and him and my Momma went to Bowman Gray Stadium almost every Saturday night growing up. I thought that was what everyone did!

Daddy worked on many pit crews from 311 Speedway to Bowman Gray to North Wilkesboro and beyond.

Some of hs best memories were racing with Frank Fleming from the SMART Tour to the Busch Cars with Frank and the Wood Brothers. Frank was very special to Daddy.

Momma once said the only way to get Daddy to cut our grass was to paint racing stripes and a number on the lawnmower! He sure did love racing!

Daddy worked at RJReynolds Tobacco Company for over 30 years. He was a supervisor. I wanted to be one, too. But he wisely suggested I look for a less stressful job.

Daddy loved being a Boy Scout as a kid, and he was thrilled when my boys wanted to be Scouts, too.

He was the Scoutmaster for their troop and was extremely proud that thay and a lot of the other Scouts earned their Eagle rank. Daddy never did because his old Troop disbanded before he could finish his rank.

Daddy loved tinkering with stuff and could fix just about anything! I learned a lot from him.

Daddy, I love you and I'm going to miss you terribly. But I'm glad you and Momma are together again. I know how much you missed her. too.

Keep racing Daddy, I'll see you at that Final Finish Line!
